I think the fat is better, the latter versions of the ps3 don't have backwards compatibility for ps1/2. I bought my ps3 fat back in 2008 and i still works fine to this day. The slim is better at dispersing heat and has a much larger HDD, but the original fats had hardware-based backward compatibility with PS2 games.
